An Eye Exam is About One Thing

Making Sure That You Have the Best Possible Vision Today and into the Future

Regular eye exams are the best way to detect eye problems, developing eye diseases, and other issues before they impair your vision. As with most types of disease, early diagnosis and treatment greatly improve recovery and long-term health. Vision changes or loss are not always obvious and our doctors want to be proactive in encouraging regular comprehensive eye exams.

The Alberta Association of Optometrists (AAO) Recommends That Healthy Albertan Adults Have Their Eyes Examined Every One to Two Years

During an eye exam, multiple tests will be done to assess your ocular health and vision quality. This information is used by our Optometrists to make decisions regarding long-term vision care, corrective lenses, and other aspects of your eye care.

Our Eyes Change as We Age & Should Be Monitored Annually

As with all things in our bodies, our eyes change with age. Some change is anticipated, such as the gradual development of presbyopia, while others are often the result of developing eye diseases. The most common and potentially troubling eye conditions that develop with age are cataracts, macular degeneration and glaucoma.

Many eye diseases including those mentioned already begin with no symptoms- no pain, no sudden vision loss… nothing. This “silent” development means that a disease will often progress over the course of months or even years before the patient notices. Sadly, vision lost to such diseases is generally lost forever.

Annual eye exams are the best proactive mechanism we have for detecting and treating eye diseases early.
Early treatment can reduce vision loss by as much as 95%- have your eyes examined every year.

Compassionate Eye Care Focused On Improving Your Quality of Life

Dealing with visual challenges can be extremely frustrating. At Calgary Optometry Centre, our focus is on improving your quality of life by providing the best eye care available.

By helping your eyes stay healthy we can ensure you enjoy your independence as much as possible. While assessing your eye health, we also update your corrective lens prescription and ensure you leave our office seeing as well as you can.

What Adults and Seniors Can Expect
From a Comprehensive Eye Exam

Most eye exams are completed in under an hour.
Contact lens fitting exams may take slightly longer.

Pre-exam testing

Before you meet with one of our Optometrists, you will have some preliminary testing done by an Optometric Assistant. These tests are fast and non-invasive and are used to help guide the tests performed by the Optometrist.

These tests include:

  • Optomap retinal imaging – Using a high-resolution, wide-field digital retinal camera, a detailed image is taken of your internal eye structures (retina, macula, etc.). Eye diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration are both clearly visible via this process.
  • Ocular coherence tomography (OCT) – Similar in nature to retinal imaging, albeit different in process, the OCT imaging equipment that we use allows us to create highly-detailed, three-dimensional images of the back of your eye. We pay particular attention to your optic nerve and macula both of which, when damaged by eye diseases like glaucoma or macular degeneration, cause serious and irrecoverable vision loss.
  • Visual field testing – This process assesses your peripheral vision. Certain eye diseases, such as glaucoma, will impact your peripheral vision before central vision is affected. Visual field testing can provide an early clue about developing eye diseases.
  • Autorefractor – This test quickly approximates what corrective lens prescription, if any, is needed for your eyes. The Optometrist uses this information to quickly hone in on the ideal prescription.
  • Tonometer – This test measures your intraocular pressure (IOP). An abnormal IOP is a strong indicator of certain eye diseases, including (you guessed it) glaucoma.

After the preliminary testing is complete, you will meet with one of our Optometrists for more testing and to discuss any concerns you may have.

Tests the Optometrist will perform include:

  • Case history – gathering information about your vision and eye health concerns. Updated general health and medications information as both of these factors may affect vision and eye health.
  • Visual examination of internal and external the eye structure. Your eyes not only provide information about your ocular health, they often provide a good indication of overall health. We assess yours during the exam to ensure everything looks as it should.
  • Vision clarity testing/prescription refinement – If your eyes would benefit from a corrective lens prescription, the Optometrist will fine-tune your prescription to meet your specific requirements.
  • Binocular vision assessment – the eyes are meant to work as a team. Various testing is done to make sure the two eyes are aligned, tracking and focussing together.
  • Digital imaging assessment – The Optometrist will review the images captured by the retinal camera and OCT equipment, outlining any changes or concerns they may have.

The Optometrist may perform other tests, including dilation, as needed.

Most eye exams take under 60 minutes to complete.

Senior citizens and children both benefit immensely from annual eye exams, as their eyes are changing more rapidly compared to most adults.

Annual eye exams for patients over the age of 65 are provided by Alberta Health, including any test deemed necessary by the Optometrist.
